A novel near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy imaging technique can determine the hardness of maize (corn) grains without destroying them, says a new paper in JNIRS—Journal of Near Infrared Spectroscopy. This new technique could offer food processors huge savings in time and money compared to other methods for determining grain hardness. -

This was seen throughout the range of analytical techniques, with compact mass spectrometers, NMRs, ESRs, UV/vis, mid-IR as well as NIR spectrometers. NIR reflectance spectroscopy for barley digestible energy analysis
A new NIR reflectance spectroscopy calibration is providing barley growers and their customers with a quick and accurate analysis of the digestible energy content of barley. Researchers at the University of Alberta, in collaboration with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, have developed a NIR calibration to analyse the digestible energy in barley.
